If you were a girl in high school at some point, you probably had the impression that boys were better at math than girls. In the article I read, they were saying that the reason was because parents and teachers give the sense that math comes easier for boys. Sometimes it seems like this because the dad will generally help with math homework before the mom volunteers to do so. 57% of the bachelor degrees earned in 2013 were received by women, but only 43% were received in the math field. Math is taught in a dry, procedural way in most schools and that is how most boys learn, Girls learn it easier when it is connected to real life and connected altogether, but in most math classes it is not taught this way, even though it is how math really is.
The person writing this article was a mom of two daughter. She was thinking the way she approaches math with her daughter should change, but I don't really agree with this. I think that both boys and girls are good at math, and in some circumstances girls can be better at it than boys. In the past, boys were generally the ones who were being educated which resulted in them being better in math and other subjects in general. But when computers and programming first started it was mainly done by women. Women were considered perfectly suited for the job, and men would do the work that required more labor. I think that now boys and girls are given the same opportunities in education. Each person learns a certain way, and I don't think that the gender has much to do with what subject they are better at. The article talked about wanting women to be able to go into more math fields, to have more diversity and equality, but women aren't in math because they can't be in it. They chose to follow a different field because they have the right to and that is what they wanted to do.
