In the Second Crusade, the Christians acquired help from Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany. Unfortunately though, they did not win this crusade. Through all of it they still fought for what they believed in. You can see this because not long after there were other crusade. This Crusade was the second crusade called for by the Pope. This was there second attempt to defeat the Muslims who were still trying to take over the Holy Lands. The Pop and many other Christian leaders though that it was necessary to have this crusade especially after the loss of the County of Edessa. This loss of Edessa confirmed and reinforced the urgency to fight that they were already most likely planning to do. So these groups of Christians were ready and had a will to fight. They weren't ready to back down. No loss or win would change their course of action. Pope Eugenius issued help form Louis VII of France. An abbot also convinced Conrad III of Germany to help with the Crusade as well. Both of them arrived in Constantinople in 1147. (http://www.umich.edu/~eng415/timeline/summaries/second_crusade.htm) . They then attacked a Muslim city which was previously an ally to the Christians. Their plan was to destroy the Turkish armies and secure a passage, recover Edessa, and provide a supplement to Jerusalem. The Turks won the battle which was much needed for them, but unfortunately not for the Christians. Most people see this crusade as a failure. This attack against the Muslims didn't immediately help them, but it did help them by creating an alliance with and having the support of the Franks (which were the people of France) in the future. The Christians always seemed to be on the defense, but now they started to be on the offense. If you look at the map you can see actually a large population of Christians which I found interesting. And you can also see that Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany both came from different directions. This is actually on of the reason people think the second crusade was a failure because of their lack of communication. But it couldn't be easy. They didn't have a device that could help them communicate in a moments notice. I think that this crusade was very interesting because where most people see it as a failure, I see it as proof of their passion and endurance and belief for what they were fighting for. I did help them in the future, but most importantly it showed that they weren't willing to give up. Have you or a loved one suffered from vomiting of blood, fever, abdominal pains, and more?
(Mia nodding) If so you most likely have the bubonic plague. Avoid leaving your house, take less baths, and if there's a chicken around, rub it on your wounds. (demonstration of each) Talk to your doctor before trying these methods. (talks to doctor) WARNING! Going to the doctor may increase the risk of being exposed to the plague. 5,000 people died yesterday, but let's look on the bright side, at least you're not one of them. The map shows when these places converted to Christianity. In Spain, there is a week called Semana Santa, which translates to Holy Week. During this week, there are thousands of people in the streets and a slow moving parade going through the town. Someone in that town said that it isn't really religious, but turned it into a more cultural activity. There are 57 million people in Spain. Most of them are Catholic, but only 10% - 20% attend church. Barely 1% are part of the evangelical church. In 1939 to 1975, Fransisco Franco was the dictator of Spain made the official religion, catholic. During this time, the evangolists were being discriminated and persecuted against
In this picture it seems like his people are not unified and seem to be arguing. But the guy on the right in the yellow seems to "worship" him or admire him.
World view of Leader
Red - quality mentioned in the Bible Green - quality from worldview Blue - quality shared from both Bible and world King Solomon is the son of David, and when he just started as king, he asked God to give him wisdom and discernment. He asked God, as His servant, to give him this wisdom so that he would be able to rule his people well and know what was right and wrong. "Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" 1 Kings 3:7-9 Solomon, the wisest and foolish I think that King Solomon had good intentions in the beginning of his rule. He asked God for wisdom, as a servant of God, and God granted him this wisdom and gave him riches along with it. Even though God gave him wisdom, he was very foolish at times. Solomon had many wives and concubines. He eventually started worship false idols and veer away from God. He gave into many temptations of lesser men as well. King Solomon had many accomplishments including building a temple, building roads and buildings, and acquiring thousands of horses and chariots. He did a lot during the time he was king, but to satisfy his wandering mind, he turned to worldly pleasures. His accomplishments were almost meaningless though when they stopped being for God. Leader Qualities Skillful/Successful - Solomon was good at architecture and management, he built many buildings Smart/Wise - He was wise and smart even though he didn't use it for God's glory Servant/Helpful/Selfless - He started out wanting wisdom as a servant of God, with a helpful, serving heart Selfish - He started to lust for worldly pleasures Righteousness - He was good, and he was loved by God since he was a child, but he drifted away from God. It seems that the world thinks that to be a successful leader you must be ruthless and do whatever it take to get what you want. From these views, King`Solomon is a great, successful leader. But I don't really think this is true. Steve Jobs, for example, is seen as a successful businessman, but when people find out how he ran things, they start to see him differently. I think that Donald Trump is hardworking, ruthless, successful, selfish, smart, confident, prideful and reliable. But I don't necessarily think that he is the best leader. Many people think he a bad leader for a lot of reasons. Because of this, I do not believe that the world has the wrong idea of a leader. I think that our world just has a lot of leaders that are ruthless. prideful, and "bad" leaders. Why is His Life Interesting? - I think Solomon was both a good and bad leader. He was definitely successful, but his morals were a little mixed up. - I think it is weird that God would give Solomon a gift of wisdom when He knew that Solomon would screw up and misuse the "gift." Script for Fall of Rome
M: The Roman empire. One of the greatest and longest lasting empires. It endured many years of wars, fluctuating economy, and a constant change of power. It still is a question why this powerful civilization declined. M: I’m Hoda Kotb and I'm here with Gerda Lerner, expert historian, to get her insight on why Rome really fell. A: Its really good to be here Hoda. M: It’s good to have you. M: What do you believe is the reason of why Rome fell? A: Rome had many accomplishments, but it gained too much power, and its fall was inevitable. There was an abundance of immigrants and they had no control over their borders. The government and economy became very weak. M: Can you explain further? How exactly was the government weak? A: First of all, the immense size of Rome made it very difficult to govern. Also, more than 25 men took the throne in the span of 75 years. The constant change of leadership and new political views affected the way Rome was governed. M: Wow! That reminds me of our government, and when a new president is elected, depending on the party, the political views of the president will change, and the way the US is governed will also change. A: Yes. In fact, the US and the Roman Empire have many similarities. M: Really? How is this so? A: Well, in America, we are struggling with immigration, a corrupt government, and a failing economy, in the same way that Rome was dealing with all these things. One of the main problems was the immigration of the barbarians, which resulted in a change of culture, M: Did the barbarians present danger to Rome? A: Actually yes. The Romans treated the barbarians very poorly, which led them to revolt against the Romans. The combination of their weak government, immigration, and the attack of the barbarians made it very easy for Rome to fall. M: Wow, so I guess Rome didn’t fall in a day. |
